Road Trip 2010 - Glacier and on to Canada

It's hard to decide what my favorite part of this trip was. Yellowstone was amazing, surreal, and beautiful. But the Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park was off the beaten path... This area is not on the main road (Going to the Sun Road). We drove through a reservation to get there, around their free-range horses along windy mountain roads. Our full day in Glacier started out rainy, and we saw a rainbow over the Many Glacier Hotel. We got wet hiking to a waterfall, but by lunch time the rain cleared and we could finally see the view. We hiked 10 miles that day over varied terrain (see photos...) and finished it off with bison burgers and huckleberry ice cream at the Swiss Lounge of the Many Glacier Hotel. Back at our campsite we tried out Campfire Colors - we had bought a packet years ago at the Canadian Tire in Yellowknife and finally remembered to bring it along!








After two nights camping in Glacier we were off to Canada and Waterton (the Canadian half of the International Peace Park). On the way to the border crossing we saw a grizzly bear with two cubs not too far off the side of the road. Waterton was beautiful too. We hiked to another waterfall, and explored the townsite. This is the view from the Prince of Wales Hotel - we stayed out on the hill overlooking this lake until the sun went behind the mountains and it got chilly.

We spent time with Alfie's family before finally turning back toward home. We had a good visit and saw some of the extended family too since there was an early celebration of Alfie's grandpa's 80th while we were there.

Did we win the "license plate game"? Not quite... We saw all the states, even Alaska and Hawaii, except for Delaware!!
