Our first real road trip stop (besides staying in Sioux Falls for a night) was the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. If you like the seed art at the fair, you will enjoy the Corn Palace. This year's theme is transportation - my favorite one is the hot air balloon.
Badlands National Park - our first national park together!

We had a good day for hiking there. It wasn't too hot, there was a breeze, and it wasn't raining. We saw a lot of flowers in the Badlands, too - and cactus!

Wall Drug is pretty hilarious, really... Although there is a lot of history there too. We enjoyed walking down hallways looking at menu pages from 1948 (baked ham sandwich: 35 cents), and photos of people and events from way back when. And yes, we had some free ice water. Our last spot to visit that first day was Mount Rushmore. We got there while it was still light out and saw it like that, then we stayed until it was dark and they had the lighting ceremony. It was great that it worked out for us to do that - the lighting ceremony is worth seeing.

Up next - Yellowstone!
