A weekend off

We took a weekend off from everything in September so we could go camping, hiking, and canoeing!!

Wild River State Park

Alfie standing on the sand island where we had lunch

Maria building an inukshuk on the sand island

The view from the canoe

Coming out into the prairie from the wooded part of a hiking trail

White chocolate s'more!

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park

Alfie and the funny tree

The fall colors were starting, so we got some yellow glow

Frontinac State Park

We watched the raptors soaring from one of the overlooks on the bluff

More fall colors

The trail along the river bluff

We found an awesome millipede and spent some time playing with it...

Caterpillars!

We saw five kinds of caterpillars over the course of the weekend.

Giant Leopard Moth

The classic Wooly Bear!

We also saw a white one with black spikes, but we didn't have the camera along for that one.

We hiked over 8 miles on one of the days - we haven't figured out the other days yet. It was a good weekend. All three of these were State Parks we had not visited yet. New territory! And we found a good caterpillar guide book that will probably be part of a future Amazon purchase...

Funny, Renee has a picture of her and her brother in that same tree in Big Woods from nearly 20 years ago!
Then 8 years ago after hiking the trails with her parents I kinda hinted that Renee and I should get married. I think she said something to the effect that if that was a proposal I'd better do a better job than that! Ah Big Woods.
